Stonehill Down Reserve

Size: 20ha.

High on the chalk ridge running west/east across the Isle of Purbeck, this downland reserve has far-reaching views across the Wareham Forest, with Poole Harbour to the east.

Wildlife interest:

  • Common spotted, early purple & bee orchids in early summer.
  • Downland flowers in profusion, including horseshoe vetch, carline thistles.
  • Woodland show of primroses & ramsons.
  • Lulworth skipper & Adonis blue butterflies may be seen.

Best time to visit:

Spring & summer.

Access:

Several paths cross the reserve, but difficult ground conditions make access limited.

Location:

Map ref. SY 925825.  Turn off A351 at Springfield Country Hotel & continue straight.  Take second left signposted East Creech.  Access is at the top of the hill opposite Creech Barrow.
