Size: 20.7ha.
Jointly owned with the Grasslands Trust. The strip lynchets around the hidden village of South Poorton provide evidence of how the steeply sloping hillsides were originally farmed. Much remains open grassland and is grazed to maintain the habitat.
Wildlife interest:
- Range of flora includes dwarf thistle & small scabious on the drier grassy areas & yellow iris & marsh arrowgrass in the boggy ground adjacent to the stream.
- Mammals include dormouse, harvest mouse & badger.
- Goldfinch & linnet are seen, with the occasional wheatear passing through in the spring.
Best time to visit:
Any time, with late spring & summer probably best.
Access:
Limited due to the steep slopes & boggy ground, particularly after heavy rain.
Location:
Map ref. SY 513977. Turn off the A356 at the Rampisham masts and head 3 miles SW or take the road N out of Powerstock for a mile to reach South Poorton. Access to the reserve is from left side of the narrow winding road leading out to the W. of the village (Ridgeback Lane). Small car park on the reserve. |
