Size: 6ha.
Lowland area of former water meadows, with small area of woodland and site of a Roman Villa/temple and medieval village. Water from the River Frome is diverted to flood the fields using restored Victorian sluices.
Wildlife interest:
- Kingfisher, dipper & grey wagtail.
- Potential for visiting winter birds & migrating waders.
- Signs of otters & water voles.
- Pignut & bird's-foot trefoil in the drier parts, with eyebright on the ground previously disturbed by archaeological digging.
Best time to visit:
Any, but visitors braving wet conditions may be rewarded by sightings of birds.
Access:
Limited by difficult ground conditions & no parking close by.
Location:
Map ref. SY 615953. Turn left off A37 (Dorchester to Yeovil road) just past Grimstone, on to A356. Turn left in Frampton at sign to Southover. Limited parking along roadside. Reserve reached by foot only or bicycle from here. Follow road around to the right through Southover until the end of the houses. Take the path/cycleway to reach the entrance (approx. 500m) to the reserve on your right marked with information panel. |
