Mill Ham Island Reserve

Size: 0.8ha.

Cross the fields & over a small bridge to find this small reserve, with steep banks to River Stour on one side & a wet reedy area to the other on the river's old course.  With its dense vegetation, this little visited area offers a retreat for water birds.

Wildlife interest:

  • Swan, moorhens & ducks with herons & reed buntings in the reeds & goldfinches feeding on teasels.
  • Naturally-occurring scrubby plants, including comfrey.
  • Various tree species planted 25 years ago.

Best time to visit:

Any, but avoid times of heavy rain & high water levels.

Access:

Very overgrown without paths.

Location:

Map ref. ST 824126.  4 miles W. of Sturminster Newton, turn E. off A357 signposted to Child Okeford & park by the railway bridge.  Take the public footpath across the fields to the river & reserve entrance.
