Size: 12.2ha.
Site of former stone quarries abandoned 100 years ago. It has been left to regenerate naturally, although there is some scrub management and control of recreational activities. High on Portland, the reserve has excellent views of the Dorset mainland, Chesil Beach & the Fleet lagoon.
Wildlife interest:
- Interesting plant species include horseshoe vetch, kidney vetch and autumn gentian.
- Lichens & bryophytes are plentiful.
- Adonis & chalkhill blue butterflies can be seen.
- Bird species include whitethroats, linnets, meadow pipits & little owls.
Best time:
Late spring & summer.
Access:
Plenty of paths but sheer rock faces, steep slopes & loose stones underfoot.
Location:
Map ref. SY 690728. On the Isle of Portland take the A354, climb the hill & immediately look for small parking area set back off the E. side of the road. Entrance to the reserve is marked by a finger post just off Yeates Road. |
