Budding Marine BiologistsThe first week of June has always been a hectic time at the Marine Centre and this year was no exception!  Over 5 days 17 school groups visited the centre and took part in warden-led activities on the shore including guided rock pooling, scavenger hunts and snorkelling for softies.

seabed20camera20Steve20TrewhellaAn underwater camera has now been installed in the bay, which allows visitors to the marine centre to explore under the sea without getting wet!  For the minimal fee of 20p, the user can control the camera using a joystick and zoom buttons - it's a great way to experience life under the waves.  There has already been a wide variety of wildlife sighted, such as tompot blennies, corkwing wrasse and even a diving cormorant!

snorkellingA specially designed snorkel trail has been set out in the bay.  Marked out by white buoys, the 400m long trail includes a variety of different seabed habitats and is a great way to see the diversity of wildlife that lives in the bay.  Available to buy in the Marine Centre is a waterproof guide, which gives clear instructions on how to follow the trail as well as handy identification photos of the species you are most likely to see.

planktonRunning everyday throughout May half term, Project Plankton was a great way for adults and young people alike to get involved and learn more about one of our most important marine organisms - plankton!  Activities included model making, quizzes and an opportunity to get up close and personal with different planktonic species using the Marine Centre's microscope and projector.

On Monday 26th May the Young Marine Wardens set off for Portland. The weather was bad but everyone was still excited...

The Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve aquaria has started its annual makeover where the wardens clean out and re-theme the tanks.  It's a great opportunity to have an excuse to go rockpooling!  Despite the winter temperatures, there's plenty of life about!
