Marine Volunteering

Volunteer Marine Wardens are an essential asset to the running of the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve - a group of trained individuals who work along side Dorset Wildlife Trust staff. They receive training in topics such as species identification, marine conservation issues and protection, wardening, cetaceans and fishing.

What do Volunteers do?

Volunteers help with a range of tasks, including:

  • Manning the marine centre
  • Patrolling the reserve
  • Monitoring research projects and carrying out surveys
  • Helping to deliver our education programme
  • Assisting on guided walks and events
  • Helping on work parties, such as beach cleans and reserve maintenance

Free Newsletter

Volunteers recieve a regular newsletter Kimmeridge Tidings, and the opportunity to get involved with other Dorset Wildlife Trust activities.

Young Marine Warden Training Scheme

The K Team meet monthly for training and practical sessions in marine conservation at the marine centre, Kimmerige Bay.  The 15 young people are aged 13-19 and learn all about marine biology and ecology and put their knowledge into practise within the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve throughout the year. Funding and accreditation is gained though V Involved and Duke of Edinburgh's award.   Click here to find out more.

Volunteer divers

Register with the marine centre for our annual FishWatch to help survey the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve, usually held in June. Here

Affiliate your dive club with the marine reserve.  For a small fee your club will receive a audio visual presentation on 'Underwater Purbeck' or 'Our Changing Seas' and information on local dive sites and sightings.
