Size: 41ha.
This reserve is a surviving area of dry & wet heathland, home to rare reptiles, several species of butterfly and typical heathland birds. Evidence of its history is provided by two bowl barrows in the middle of the reserve.
Wildlife interest:
- Apart from dominant heather & ling, dodder and lousewort can be found on the heath.
- Yellow bartsia & spotted orchids in the cleared edges & bog asphodel in the wetter areas.
- Dartford warblers & stonechats can be found in the scrub.
- Grayling, silver-studded blue, white admiral & silver-washed fritillary butterflies in the open.
- Dragonflies & bog bush crickets around the bog pools.
Best time to visit:
Late summer for the heather colour.
Access:
Uneven ground & often wet underfoot.
Location:
Map ref. SY 862848. Turn left after the station in Wool onto Bindon Lane; at the second junction turn right at Highwood. Park at the end of the tarmac road; walk down track into the reserve. |
