Bracketts Coppice Reserve

Size: 38ha.

Ancient woodland slopes down to a small fast-flowing stream.  Swathes of wood anemones, with orchids providing colour to the open areas.  The haymeadows are cut annually and wood pasture is grazed, creating fields of wild flowers & butterflies.

Wildlife interest:

  • Typical woodland bird species are found.
  • The stream providing sightings of grey wagtails & kingfishers.
  • Flowers include early purple orchids, wood anemones, sanicle & dog violets, with betony, fleabane & devil's-bit scabious in the grassland.
  • Butterflies include silver-washed & marsh fritillaries.

Best time to visit:

  • Spring for the flowers & birds.
  • Summer for butterflies.
  • Autumn brings an abundance of fungi

Access:

Limited parking with difficult access due to steep and muddy tracks.

Location:

Map ref. ST 514074.  Gate entrance & small car park on S. side of minor road, 2 miles due N. of Corscombe & 3 miles west of Halstock.
