There is a rare chance to walk along a private stretch of the River Stour this Saturday with Dorset Wildlife Trust and Nature Watch Corfe Mullen. Special permission has been given for this guided walk, looking for signs of wetland mammals at Bear Mead, a private wildlife haven made up of 25 acres of meadows, river banks, streams & old hawthorn hedgerows. DWT Rivers and Wetlands expert, Sarah Williams, will be showing how to spot signs of water vole, otter and other mammals.
Nature Watch Corfe Mullen co-ordinator, Jane Adams, said: "We are very lucky to be able to explore this untouched piece of Corfe Mullen. So please come along and explore with us! If you have ever wondered what you should be looking for on your riverside walks, and you are aged between 1 and 90 years old, this is definitely the event for you." Nature Watch Corfe Mullen is a 12-month project set up to record wild plants and animals in and around the village. This is one of a series of events, run in partnership with Dorset Wildlife Trust, to help residents to discover the amazing wildlife right on their doorstep.
The Wetland Wander is on Saturday 6th September from 10.30 am to 12 noon at Bear Mead, off the main A31 opposite Candy's Lane, Corfe Mullen.
Directions: From the Wimborne roundabout on the A31 (bottom of Wimborne Rd, Corfe Mullen), drive towards the Coventry Arms Inn and the entrance to Bear Mead is on the right, past the petrol station, opposite the turn-off to Candy's Lane.
It is an unmade track, sign-posted as a bridleway. There is parking down the track (in a field) but it is bumpy - so low slung cars beware! More parking may be available in Candy's Lane.
