Urban Wildlife Day
Dorset Wildlife Trust proudly shows off its newest Wildlife Centre at a grand Urban Wildlife Open Day on 14th June. Situated right next to Upton Heath, the Urban Wildlife Centre lives up to its name; not only is it a base for the DWT and Urban Heaths Partnership staff, but more importantly it is home to brown long-eared bats in the roof, bluetits, great tits and sparrows in the nestboxes and all manner of creatures in the pond.. You will be able to see some of the wildlife on Springwatch-style cameras placed in nesting boxes and beamed to screens in the state of the art David Ballam Education Room. But there's no need for a camera to watch the bluetits diving into a vertical metal pole to feed their young family or to look for bee orchids in the car park!
There will be lots of activities for all the family, encounters with live wildlife, including moths, small mammals, reptiles and pond creatures, and hourly guided walks on Upton Heath with the experts to learn about the internationally protected habitat of this urban gem, with its views across Poole Harbour to the Purbeck hills.
DWT's Nicky Hoar said: "This Centre has been something of a hidden gem but not any more! Come and meet the team, learn about the wildlife that is right on your doorstep and find out how you can get involved."
The Urban Wildlife Open Day is on Saturday 14th June from 11 am to 2 pm at the Urban Wildlife Centre, Beacon Hill Lane, Corfe Mullen BH21 3RX. Free entry. Refreshments available, including barbecue. For more information ring 01202 692033.
