A large lake formed from an old clay pit, surrounded by heathland and in an urban setting. It supports an interesting variety of reptiles, birds, butterflies & dragonflies.
Wildlife interest:
- All 6 British reptile species can be found on the heath.
- Grayling & green hairstreak butterflies & emperor moths on the gorse & heather.
- The flooded clay-pit attracts many dragonflies & damselflies & visiting winter birds.
Best time to visit:
- Summer for the reptiles, butterflies & dragonflies.
- Winter for the birds.
- Heather, ling, bell heather & cross-leaved heath mix with the yellow western gorse to give a blaze of colour in late summer.
Access:
Limited due to flights of steps.
Location:
Map ref. SZ 063931. Turn off the A3040 (Alder Road) at roundabout to Sainsbury's supermarket, (Talbot Heath branch). Access is via steps from the Community Centre car park on the right hand side past the petrol station.
