A north Dorset man is taking extreme measures to support his local wildlife. Not content with a 2.4 mile swim in Sherborne Lake, not even content with a 112 mile cycle ride through Dorset, he felt he had to add a 26.2 mile marathon to his fundraising effort for Dorset Wildlife Trust, and all to be completed within 17 hours. This is the requirement for the Ironman, the huge international triathlon event taking place this September.
Matt says: "I have already covered more than 1500 miles in training this year, enjoying wonderful birdsong and wild flowers on the way. I even met a weasel running down the road, but I am a bit worried about facing the huge pike that live in Sherborne Lake."
Matt has already competed in 3 marathons but this will be his first triathlon. Completion of the event will put him in an elite group of men and women who have overcome the immense physical and mental challenges of the event.
Dorset Wildlife Trust's Head of Fundraising and Marketing, Alastair Cook, said: "This has to be the hardest thing anybody has ever done for us and we are extremely grateful to Matt. His hard work will help us to protect the Dorset countryside that he loves so much. He deserves lots of support and we wish him the very best of luck on the day."
The British Ironman event takes place on 7th September, starting and finishing at Sherborne Lake. You can find out more or sponsor Matt at www.justgiving.com/ironmanmattdriver.
